Fellows program eliminated by budget cuts

Carmen Scoggins ’94 ’98 always wanted to be a teacher. And as a high school senior headed toward that career, the now 18-year veteran Spanish teacher had her sights on the Teaching Fellows Program at Appalachian.

“The chance to be a Teaching Fellow was a true honor. It was such an amazing scholarship that it attracted some of the state’s most ambitious and energetic teacher candidates,” said Scoggins, who has spent her entire career teaching in Watauga County schools, and is considered a leader in her field.

Dedication of the new Reich College of Education Building

Appalachian State University will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new College of Education Building Thursday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m. The building is located at the corner of College and Howard streets. Information about parking will be provided at a later date.

Guided tours of the building will follow the formal ceremony. Tours will conclude at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Swing for Scholarships

The 6th Annual Swing for Scholarships Golf Benefit will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, NC. The fundraiser benefits RCOE teacher education majors through merit-based scholarships. The entry fee for the tournament is $125 per person or $500 per team. Interested golfers are encouraged to sign up early as space on the course is limited. To learn about opportunities to sponsor a hole, donate items for the silent auction/door prizes or get more information, call Dolly Farrell at (828)-262-2804 or send an email to golfbenefit@appstate.edu.
